Turning in copper

That copper is worth money, many people know. What not everyone knows, however, is that a lot of households and businesses have unused copper lying around. Sometimes it even just ends up in the trash. A shame! We would like to tell you about the different types of copper, how to recognize them and how you, as an individual or company, can hand in your old copper to us.

Recycling at Van Pelt

The global copper supply is running out. With the electrification of our society, there is actually an increasing demand for copper, as copper is an important conductor for electricity. If you have old copper lying around, this scarcity naturally works in your favor; scarcity drives up the price. In addition, by having copper recycled, you are also creating a better environment. Copper mining is very harmful to the environment due to chemical contamination, high water consumption and CO2 emissions. In principle, copper can be recycled indefinitely.

Different types of copper

What types of copper are there and what do they provide?

  • Copper cables: Old, unused copper cables. This contains approximately 38% copper. Want to turn in copper cables? Then cut off the plugs for a higher yield.
  • Brass: Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and consists of about 63% copper. Zinc is added to make the material hard and provides a yellow color. This is why we also call brass yellow copper.
  • Mixed copper: Mixing copper with other metals (for example, iron or stainless steel) makes the material more solid and can be used for such things as old pipes, faucets and gutters. Mixed copper contains approximately 96% copper and thus brings in a lot.
  • Hand-pinned copper: Copper in its purest form; not mixed another type of copper. It therefore achieves a copper percentage of more than 99%. Pure copper is soft and pliable. You can find this type of copper in old wiring and cables, when they have been made completely free of plastic.
