Daan, Manager BackOffice, knows like no other that at Van Pelt Recycling it is not only about processing residual metal -and electronics- but also about creating value from everything that remains. With his broad perspective, Daan is the pivot between people, processes and sustainable progress. He likes to take us through what his work looks like on a daily basis, what challenges there are and what motivates him.
An unexpected career in recycling
Leading the way in sustainability and innovation
"My legal background therefore plays an important role within my position. For example, in the recycling industry we have to deal with an extensive set of laws and regulations. This ranges from waste legislation and permit requirements to specific certifications, such as WEEELABEX and ISO standards. With my knowledge, I ensure that our organization not only complies with the strictest requirements, but also sets up its processes in such a way that we remain at the forefront of sustainability and innovation, thus continuously distinguishing ourselves."
The challenge of laws and regulations
"We do not close our eyes to new requirements from the market and the government, because careful compliance is deep in our DNA. Although new regulations often make work processes more complex, I actually see this as a positive challenge. Realistically achievable solutions are my focus. To make that possible, I engage my colleagues on both the shop floor and the workplace to find workable solutions and involve their expertise in these issues. In doing so, I always keep environmental and social impact in mind."

A typical workday at Van Pelt as Manager BackOffice
"No day is the same - and that is precisely what makes my role so interesting. My role combines operational and strategic tasks, where I am active both internally and externally. Every working day we start before opening time with a joint meeting with the business units. During this meeting we determine the daily schedule, set priorities and anticipate possible challenges. This enables us to respond quickly to customer needs and market developments.
Furthermore, I manage three important pillars within the organization: quality, labor and environment (KAM). I monitor our work processes for safety, efficiency and quality, with the environment at the forefront. In addition, I maintain close contact with our drivers, for example about route changes or specific pick-up locations. I also have direct contact with our customers to discuss their wishes and optimize the service. This includes processing customer reports with which I keep them informed about the processing process and the recycling results achieved.
Another important part of my work is the downstream analysis of the recycling process. Through accurate documentation, I map what percentage of incoming material is recyclable. Not only do these analyses contribute to our certifications, but they also provide valuable insights to customers about the handling of their waste streams and possible process improvements.
Team spirit for the same goal
"The versatility of my work and the strong team spirit within our company energize me on a daily basis. Here cooperation is key and we achieve results together, always with a greater goal in mind. I am proud that with Van Pelt we create awareness around recycling, always communicating with integrity and transparency about the value of raw materials and our processes. Something that my position makes me extra happy. Precisely this approach is so appreciated by our clients."
